Need fitted cupboards in Canning Town?

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.

Fitted cupboards in Canning Town

In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and landing shelves for bedding and towels.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Canning Town built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap at the side or a space above. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so less space goes to waste. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Built around your room
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Making use of tricky spaces in Canning Town

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Canning Town were built since 2000 (about 38%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Canning Town include Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Newham included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Canning Town. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Cedd's Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork

If your children go to Rosetta Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How parking will work on your street

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Canning Town?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Canning Town is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Custom House station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
