Loft storage for your home in South Kensington
Do you need loft storage in South Kensington?
Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It is ideal for things you need now and then.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- Low eaves that nobody can use
- A dormer that is not being used
- Needing storage in a loft office
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
If you live in a period home close to Chapel of St Luke, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
About our loft storage in South Kensington
Behind an eaves door, there is often insulation and a need for ventilation. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in South Kensington, we will see what’s there. People normally come to us about needing storage in a loft office and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around South Kensington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Parking near your home
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you get in touch
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You tell us about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
- We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Making use of awkward spaces in South Kensington
In the neighbourhood around South Kensington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 71%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of South Kensington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Luke (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Chapel of St Luke (Grade II*), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. In South Kensington, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.
For a flat near West Brompton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Our Lady of Victories RC Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
Doors and drawer fronts
The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. They’re cut to follow the angle of the ceiling.
Is bespoke worth it?
A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. Which suits you depends on your plans. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Common questions about loft storage
Can you make loft storage for a home in South Kensington?
Yes, South Kensington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in South Kensington?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.
How long will the loft storage fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
