South Kensington TV and Media Units

Thinking about TV and media units in South Kensington? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Clutter around the TV

FAQs: TV and media units in South Kensington

Do you cover homes near West Brompton station?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in South Kensington?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Can you plan for a future TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

TV and media units in South Kensington

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it isn’t a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. People normally come to us about nowhere good for speakers and cables trailing across the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. Around South Kensington, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

TV and media units for homes in South Kensington

Homes built before 1919 make up about 71% of the housing in the streets around South Kensington, with about 9% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 31 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central South Kensington. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 58% of households in the neighbourhood around South Kensington, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Burton’s Court, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your children go to Our Lady of Victories RC Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Living in a block of flats near West Brompton station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Several things affect the price:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Before the design visit

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

A large TV wall needs flat, stable panels. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits a TV unit in a period room. You choose the colour.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Honest limits

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
