Window seats in South Kensington, Kensington and Chelsea
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in South Kensington starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- A recess under the window doing nothing
Window seats designed for your room
Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Window seats in South Kensington
The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in South Kensington, we’ll help you choose. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about an empty bay that doesn’t get used and no comfortable place to sit in the light.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around South Kensington, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Making use of awkward spaces in South Kensington
About 71% of the homes in the neighbourhood around South Kensington went up before 1919, and about 9% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of South Kensington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Luke (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Chapel of St Luke (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand.
Close to Burton’s Court? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Carlyle's House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.
South Kensington is about 1 mile north-west of Kensington, part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and South Kensington is part of that. We list South Kensington among 13 places we cover in Kensington and Chelsea.
Here we cover the SW3, SW7 and SW10 postcode area for window seats. Our area takes in homes on streets like King's Road, Fulham Road and Museum Lane, along with the roads around them, for window seats and any of our other fitted furniture. The A3217 runs close to South Kensington; on busy main roads, unloading window seats takes a little planning. If you’re just outside South Kensington, we also cover Little Chelsea (1 mile south), Chelsea (1 mile east), Brompton (1 mile north-east), World's End (1 mile south) and Earl's Court (1 mile west). We also make window seats in nearby places like Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (2 miles north-west), Kensal Town (3 miles north-west) and North Kensington (3 miles north-west).
Landmarks near South Kensington
In South Kensington, that includes homes near Natural History Museum Library and Archives, Anglesea Arms and London School of Dramatic Art. The nearest railway station is West Brompton station, about 0.8 miles west of the centre. A little further out are Victoria and Albert Museum Spiral (under half a mile north) and Harrods (0.8 miles north-east). For a walk, there is Campden Hill and Serpentine.
Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

FAQs: window seats in South Kensington
Do you cover homes near West Brompton station?
Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
My house in South Kensington is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. The front includes a grille so the radiator keeps working. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.
Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?
Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We do not repair sashes or cills.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us about the window and the room, including any radiator under it.
- We visit to measure the window and go through the design.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Related advice
Do you need window seats in South Kensington?
Most people simply want to use the window. A bay can be an awkward space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.
Window seats can help with:
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- An empty bay that does not get used
- No comfortable place to sit in the light
If your children go to Our Lady of Victories RC Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
