About fitted wardrobes in SW7
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
What affects the price in SW7
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Fitted wardrobes across SW7: local notes
From Kensington, Brompton and South Kensington to the quieter streets, bedrooms across SW7 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
The biggest shares of homes in SW7 were built before 1919 (about 69%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than half of the homes in the SW7 postcode district (about 69%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 23% of households in the SW7 postcode district, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in SW7, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Kensington: For an older house near Church of St Barnabas, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Leighton House, about 0.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Tall doors need a stable material. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.
Spray-painted finish
Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.
What prompts fitted wardrobes
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Too little room for clothes
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
Pricing fitted wardrobes in SW7
The price for your room depends on:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The width and height of the space
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
What we need to know
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in SW7
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you at the design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.
