Fitted cupboards for homes in Covent Garden
In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cupboards for a utility or boot room and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Covent Garden, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
- First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
- A written quote is sent to you.
- Everything is made in our workshop.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Ask for a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Common questions about fitted cupboards
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Covent Garden?
Yes, Covent Garden is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
My home in Covent Garden is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Practical tips
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Measure the route into the room as well as the room
- Think about what each cupboard will hold
- Go easy on new doors for a while
- Point out anything that needs access
We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it’s normally a small hinge adjustment.
It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.
Do you need fitted cupboards in Covent Garden?
Standard cupboards don’t sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
- Using the full height of a room
- A utility room with proper storage
- Cupboards that suit a period house
If you live near Victoria Embankment Gardens, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it’s built for. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
