About our fitted cupboards in Holborn
We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards for a utility or boot room and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Holborn, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It is useful to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
How fitting day works
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

What else we make in Holborn
Fitted cupboards in Holborn: local notes
In the streets around Holborn, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Holborn is in the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Holborn is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
For a flat near Farringdon station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your children go to St Alban's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
The problems fitted cupboards solve
Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, particularly when it uses the full height of the room.
Here’s what fitted cupboards can help with:
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- A neat cupboard around the boiler
- A cupboard for the meters with easy access
- Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Have they thought about parking near you?
How it is made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
Plinths and scribe strips
These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.
Your questions about fitted cupboards in Holborn
I live in a flat in Holborn. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Holborn?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we have seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
How long will the cupboards take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.
