Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and let us know where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

About our fitted cupboards in Adelphi

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. If your home has space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and a cupboard for the meters with easy access, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a flat without a loft, storage has to be found in the hall, the recesses and the rooms themselves. With most households around Adelphi in purpose-built flats, that is often the starting point. A shallow cupboard in a hall or a seat with drawers can hold a surprising amount.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and usually cost less, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. Span, depth and load all matter.

Plinths and scribe strips

Plinths and scribe strips are small parts that make a big difference in a room where nothing is quite square.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Adelphi

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Adelphi?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Adelphi homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Adelphi were built before 1919 (about 41%) and since 2000 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Adelphi, 38 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time, particularly for larger pieces.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Paul Covent Garden, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price for your room depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

A new utility room or boot room often prompts the call. There are appliances, coats, boots and cleaning things to fit in, and fitted cupboards can bring order to them.

Fitted cupboards can help with:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler

If you live near Victoria Embankment Gardens, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
