Fitted cupboards in Romford
Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so the doors clear the walls and stairs.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It’s a good choice for utility rooms and cupboards on external walls.
Fitted cupboards in Romford
A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are tall cupboards where space is short and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing.
An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Romford is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Is bespoke worth it?
You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that’s a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It’s useful to tell us about parking then, as a van normally needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Common questions about fitted cupboards
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Romford?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can you build cupboards for a boot room?
Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing like boots, coats, laundry and the vacuum. We’re carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Romford
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Romford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and since 2000 (about 30%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Romford. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 32% of homes in the neighbourhood around Romford date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For a family home near Concordia Academy, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
