Need fitted cupboards in Upminster Bridge?

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Fitted cupboards in Upminster Bridge: what you get

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If your home has a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Upminster Bridge, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Fitted storage in Upminster Bridge

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 60% of the housing in the streets around Upminster Bridge, with about 28% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upminster Bridge. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Upminster Bridge (about 28%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled and finish them to match. Drawers can sit below for shoes or smaller things.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upminster Bridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Upminster station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it’s built for. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
