FAQs: fitted cupboards in Puddle Dock

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Puddle Dock?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you cover homes near Upminster station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Fitted cupboards in Puddle Dock

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. If you’re living with a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Puddle Dock, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Fitted cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Puddle Dock

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Using the full height of a room
  • A utility room with proper storage
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

For an older house near Moor Lane Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted cupboard doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, as it stays stable and finishes evenly.

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry weight need a strong board, and birch plywood helps. Span, depth and load all matter.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. You get a written quote for the cupboards we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 80% of homes in the streets around Puddle Dock were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.
