Built-in bookshelves in Waddon: what you get
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. For a home in Waddon, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bookcases that lean or wobble and a bare wall above a doorway.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. Whatever kind of home you have in Waddon, built-in bookshelves are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Where other trades come in
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Plumbing work around the shelves
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Shelves
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later, and it suits a traditional room.
Living-room carpentry in Waddon: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Waddon, with about 25% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Waddon include Airport House (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-west, and Church of St George (Grade II), under half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 46% of households around Waddon live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 29%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
If you live near Duppas Hill, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St George, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Waddon station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Questions from Waddon
Do you cover homes near Waddon station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Waddon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
Getting a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
Advice
Practical tips
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Check the heights of art books, files and records
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
Make a note of the paint colour used. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the design visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.
