Fitted cupboards for homes in Walworth

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage in a corner nothing else fits and storage for towels and bedding.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Walworth, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the managing agent early makes the day smoother. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Walworth?

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, particularly when it uses the full height of the room.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

For a family home near Robert Browning Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Questions from Walworth

Is parking a problem for fitting in Walworth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Can you make cupboards for a utility room?

Yes. Utility and boot rooms can have tall cupboards, shelves, benches and appliance spaces. Plumbing is for your plumber and electrics for your electrician, and we plan the cupboards around their work.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Walworth

About 33% of the homes in the streets around Walworth went up since 2000, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Walworth, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and English Martyrs School (part) (Grade II), under half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Southwark included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Walworth. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Lady Margaret Church, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. For a flat near Elephant & Castle station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
