What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How square the room is
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Examples of the look you’re after
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.
Fitted cupboards in Denmark Hill
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in the colour you choose. If your home has tidying away the gas and electricity meters and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
With most households around Denmark Hill in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- You tell us where the cupboards should go.
- We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Starting with a design visit

Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They aren’t much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.
People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
If your children go to Lyndhurst Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Questions we are often asked
How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Denmark Hill?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Denmark Hill?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.
Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. Fitted storage is built in for good, and it is made for this home rather than the next one. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Denmark Hill

- Work across the whole of London
- Made for your room, not a standard size
