Fitted cupboards for your home in Nunhead

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Fitted cupboards in Nunhead

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. If you’re living with storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and landing shelves for bedding and towels, fitted cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Nunhead, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Nunhead

My home in Nunhead is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Nunhead?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. You receive a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Nunhead

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Nunhead were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Nunhead is in the Nunhead Cemetery Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Southwark included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Nunhead is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Close to Peckham Rye? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Building work or structural changes

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • A utility room with proper storage
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway

If your children go to Ivydale Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
