Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Point out anything that needs access

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it helps to know this early.

How we make fitted cupboards for Rotherhithe

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. If you are living with floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Rotherhithe, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Rotherhithe?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Rotherhithe included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

My home in Rotherhithe is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Rotherhithe

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.
