Fitted Cupboards in West Barnes

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in West Barnes, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Tall cupboards where space is short

Fitted cupboards for homes in West Barnes

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around West Barnes, it is worth looking up as well as down. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you contact us

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions from West Barnes

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in West Barnes?

Yes, West Barnes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Barnes?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in West Barnes

Some spaces are just hard to use. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture can’t use, and make them useful.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Using the full height of a room
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner

If your children go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted doors and panels, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it’s stable and smooth.

Spray-painted finish

With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, which keeps work in your home to fitting.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.
