Fitted wardrobes in West Barnes

Fitted wardrobes for homes in West Barnes

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in West Barnes, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and too little room for clothes.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around West Barnes, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

If your children go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitted bedroom furniture in West Barnes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 46% of the housing in the area around West Barnes, with about 25% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of West Barnes, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 33% of households in the area around West Barnes live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

For a flat near Motspur Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to Holy Cross, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Motspur Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in West Barnes?

Yes, we work across Merton, West Barnes included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

We plan it with you at the measuring visit, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We’ll look at the room with you at the design visit.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Decorating or plastering the room

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you are after

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
