Fitted wardrobes in Mill Hill, Barnet

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Mill Hill, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

About our fitted wardrobes in Mill Hill

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, scribed to follow the uneven walls. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage typically goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Mill Hill, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Mill Hill Broadway station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We will look at the room with you at the measuring visit.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Mill Hill?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste, leaving the floor open.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Mill Hill homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Mill Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Mill Hill is partly covered by the Mill Hill Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barnet has its own. If your street in Mill Hill is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Holcombe House, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Mill Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School NW7 or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Let us know which walls face outside

Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.
