How we make walk-in wardrobes for Custom House
Many London homes have a small room that is awkward as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. Typical reasons to get in touch are a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and a dressing area in part of a bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Custom House date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.
Shelves
We plan shelving for knitwear, bags and things you use less often. Spans and depths are sized so they do not sag.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

Advice
The problems walk-in wardrobes solve
Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
Walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- A use for a small spare room
- Shelves for shoes and bags
- The right mix of long and short hanging
If your children go to St Joachim's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Custom House
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Custom House were built since 2000 (about 64%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Custom House include Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Warehouse W (Grade II), under half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Custom House. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.3 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, message us from the contact page.

What else we make in Custom House
Questions we are often asked
Is Custom House in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes, Custom House is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Custom House?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
It’s your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. A mix of the two is common.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?
Yes, if there is enough space. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.
What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
