Loft storage in Custom House
Questions we are often asked
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Custom House?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
I live near Custom House station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Which materials go into your loft storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Loft storage for homes in Custom House
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We will discuss the options in Custom House. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a boarded loft with no proper shelving and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.
Many homes around Custom House have been built since 2000, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the eaves cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Storage in Custom House homes: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Custom House were built since 2000 (about 64%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Custom House include Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Warehouse W (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 74% of households around Custom House live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 44%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
For a family home near St Joachim's Catholic Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Do you need loft storage in Custom House?
A dormer can feel like wasted space. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It adds storage without crowding the room.
Here’s what loft storage can help with:
- Unused space in a dormer
- Low eaves that nobody can use
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
For an older house near St Matthew's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
