Custom House TV and Media Units
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Custom House, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- A big screen that dominates the wall

TV and media units for homes in Custom House
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. People usually come to us about equipment with nowhere proper to go and somewhere to keep games tidy, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A large number of homes around Custom House date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer home the living space is typically open-plan, without a chimney breast. That means TV and media units often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Custom House
Do you cover homes near Custom House station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Custom House?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables.
Do you need TV and media units in Custom House?
Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order and adds storage for the rest of the room.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
If you live in a period home close to St Matthew's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors

TV and media units in Custom House: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Custom House, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Custom House. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 64% of homes in the area around Custom House were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.
If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near St Joachim's Catholic Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

From workshop to your room
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A written quote follows.
- We then make the unit in our workshop.
- The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Spray-painted finish
Because it is sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers keep controllers and games tidy close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.
