Fitted wardrobes in Dulwich Village: what you get
An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and storage boxes stacked under the bed.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast usually sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around Dulwich Village date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
My house in Dulwich Village is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better. We look at it with you when we measure.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
What we do not do
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Structural changes to the room
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Birch plywood
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Could you do it yourself?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Dulwich Village?
A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
Close to Dulwich Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
What to check before you book
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
