Bespoke kitchens in Dulwich Village, Southwark

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Dulwich Village, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A layout for a small or awkward room

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
  3. A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

About our bespoke kitchens in Dulwich Village

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If you’re living with more storage in a small kitchen and a larder for food and small appliances, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Dulwich Village date from then. Kitchen cabinets can go higher, with tall larders and top cupboards for occasional things. Cabinets are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, with the finish agreed in your quote.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Dulwich Village

In the area around Dulwich Village, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 72%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Dulwich Village, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Dulwich Village normally needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Near listed buildings like Bell House, under half a mile south of the centre of Dulwich Village, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to St Barnabas' Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Dulwich Village is about 1 mile north of East Dulwich, in the London Borough of Southwark. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Dulwich Village is part of that. Dulwich Village is one of 21 places on our list for Southwark.

How we price bespoke kitchens

Several things affect the price:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Dulwich Village?

People also want a kitchen that’s built to last and can be repainted, which appeals if you’re staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • Extra cupboard space

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you fit furniture in a home close to North Dulwich station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dulwich Village?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It’s useful to choose them before the design is final, and your quote sets out what’s included.

How long does fitting take?

Every kitchen is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Building work, like removing walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
