How we make fitted wardrobes for Elephant and Castle

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. If your home has wasted space beside the chimney breast and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Elephant and Castle were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the tricky corners. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Elephant and Castle

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elephant and Castle?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Elephant & Castle station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That is why we measure the route, not just the room. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors

Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

What we don’t do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
