Fitted wardrobes for your home in St George's Fields
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Fitted wardrobes in St George's Fields: what you get
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. People normally come to us about not enough hanging space and mismatched bedroom furniture; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around St George's Fields were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

How it’s made
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.
Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.
Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
St George's Fields homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St George's Fields were built since 2000 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. St George's Fields is partly covered by the St George's Circus Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 43% of homes around St George's Fields were built since 2000, well above the figure for Southwark as a whole, about 28%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
If your home is one of the older houses near Former Church of St Jude, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like Old Vic Theatre, under half a mile north-west of the centre of St George's Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Questions from St George's Fields
Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?
Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
I live in a flat in St George's Fields. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the measuring visit.
How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it is useful to let us know at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Tell us about parking near your home
