Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Dulwich, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a written quote.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Ask for a quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from Dulwich
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Dulwich?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
My home in Dulwich is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it, which helps avoid condensation.
Do you work in Dulwich?
Yes. We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, Dulwich included.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe typically decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
For some, it is about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces and keeps everything out of sight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Bell House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Bedrooms in Dulwich: local notes
About 73% of the homes in the streets around Dulwich went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Part of Dulwich is in the Dulwich Wood Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Terraced houses are more common around Dulwich than across Southwark: about 29% of households, against about 14%, based on Census 2021. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections that fit.
For an older house near Christ's Chapel of God's Gift, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near West Dulwich station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Why choose us
- Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Built around your room
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
How we price fitted wardrobes
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The internal fittings
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Doors and drawers, and how many
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Getting in touch
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
