Fitted wardrobes in Enfield Highway
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and a bedroom that never feels tidy.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Enfield Highway, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

How we price fitted wardrobes
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- How you want to use the space
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Enfield Highway?
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.
Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Too little room for clothes
- No space in front for doors to swing
Forty Hall, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Before you choose who makes it
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How parking will work on your street
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That’s a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house, and are planned to suit it. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Enfield Highway
- We work across all London boroughs
- Saturdays by arrangement
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Enfield Highway?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Enfield Highway?
Yes, Enfield Highway is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
