Fitted Wardrobes in Enfield Island Village

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Enfield Island Village starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Preparing the room

Advice

How we make fitted wardrobes for Enfield Island Village

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. If your home has wardrobes that are full to bursting and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many homes around Enfield Island Village have been built since 2000, and newer bedrooms are often compact, with plasterboard walls. Fitted wardrobes are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Enfield Island Village

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Enfield Lock station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Island Village?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you at the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.
