Fitted wardrobes for your home in Stockwell

Fitted wardrobes in Stockwell

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wardrobes that are full to bursting and clothes with nowhere proper to go.

Bedrooms in flats often share a wall with the next flat or the communal corridor, and those walls can be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Stockwell, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are always fixed back.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the paint.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, particularly on an external wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Stockwell

A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

For families living near St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there is usually a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes in Stockwell: local notes

About 36% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Stockwell went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 132 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Stockwell. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. All of London, Lambeth included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Stockwell. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Stockwell, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Stockwell affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Stockwell?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Stockwell?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes Stockwell.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What materials do you use?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
