Fitted wardrobes in North Brixton
How we make fitted wardrobes for North Brixton
The inside matters as much as the doors. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. People typically come to us about not enough hanging space and space under the eaves going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a flat, a spare bedroom often doubles as a study or a guest room, so fitted furniture that keeps things out of sight helps it switch between them. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around North Brixton. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.
Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

North Brixton homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around North Brixton were built before 1919 (about 28%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of North Brixton, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Divine (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Christ Church (Grade II*), under half a mile north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 69% of households in the neighbourhood around North Brixton, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a period home close to St Michael's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near Max Roach Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Buckingham Palace, about 2.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in North Brixton
My home in North Brixton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in North Brixton?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.
How do I get started?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, for plain or panelled doors alike.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. In a flat, walls are often broken up by radiators, doors and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
- You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
- We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Before we arrive
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Let us know about parking near your home

Related advice
Before and after fitting day
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.
Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
