  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Too little room for clothes

Pricing fitted wardrobes in West Norwood

Several things affect the price:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes in West Norwood

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. People typically come to us about mismatched bedroom furniture and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

The positions of the window, the radiator and the door shape a bedroom more than its size. For any home in West Norwood, those are the first things we note at the measuring visit, then plan fitted furniture on the walls that are left. Nothing is built tight over a radiator, so the heat still reaches the room.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in West Norwood

Do you cover homes near West Norwood station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in West Norwood is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

Fitted wardrobes in West Norwood: local notes

In the area around West Norwood, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 38%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Norwood include Church of St Luke (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west, and St Luke's Church of England Primary School (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 27% of homes in the area around West Norwood were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

If you live in a flat close to West Norwood station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near St Luke's Church of England Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If your home is one of the older houses near West Norwood Congregational Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. Recesses, sloping ceilings and tricky corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have at least one. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.
