Fitted wardrobes in Little Portugal

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about storage boxes stacked under the bed and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Little Portugal, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. A leasehold flat may need consent for fixing to walls, so check your lease first.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Little Portugal

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, so you get more storage from the same floor space.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Not enough hanging space

If your children go to Platanos College or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Little Portugal

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Little Portugal?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Little Portugal is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Little Portugal affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It is planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We talk through both during the design visit.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat does not fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
