What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Fitted wardrobes in Streatham

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts don’t waste height. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere proper to go and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.

With a large share of homes around Streatham built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What it’s made from

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Streatham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Streatham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It is common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What affects the price in Streatham

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bedrooms in Streatham: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the streets around Streatham, with about 17% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Streatham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That usually means a van in Streatham needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

For an older house near St Leonard's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Kingswood House, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near St Andrew's Catholic Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
