Fitted wardrobes in Peaks Hill

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Peaks Hill

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Peaks Hill?

Yes. Peaks Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Does a conservation area in or near Peaks Hill affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you at the measuring visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are no space in front for doors to swing and mismatched bedroom furniture.

Around Peaks Hill, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Bedrooms in Peaks Hill: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Peaks Hill, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Webb Estate Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Peaks Hill. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Croydon are set locally. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mark, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Purley station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mark, less than half a mile north of the centre of Peaks Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Empty the area where we will be working

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care.

Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly. You choose the colour before we start.

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we usually scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard wardrobes cannot follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line, with hanging where it’s tall and drawers or shelves where it is low. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
