Fitted wardrobes across Croydon: what to expect

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and too little room for clothes, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

What goes into your quote

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Croydon

Across Croydon, from Thornton Heath, Coulsdon and Purley outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.

The biggest shares of homes in Croydon were built before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Of the 32 places we have local pages for in Croydon, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Croydon, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Thornton Heath: The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Stephen, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom normally needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Not enough hanging space
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Croydon

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

We plan it with you during the design visit, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It turns awkward space into storage.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
