How we make TV and media units for Peaks Hill

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Croydon and the rest of London, after a design visit and a written quote. Typical reasons to get in touch are boxes with no ventilation and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Peaks Hill, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What prompts TV and media units in Peaks Hill

Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go

Living in a block of flats near Purley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Questions from Peaks Hill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Purley station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Peaks Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Peaks Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Tell us the size you might move to at the measuring visit.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
