Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then so the doors run smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.
Fitted wardrobes in Croydon
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Typical reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and storage boxes stacked under the bed, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Many homes around Croydon were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Croydon?
Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. We can plan separate sections for each person.
Fitted wardrobes can help with:
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Not enough hanging space
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
Living in a block of flats near South Croydon station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Before you hire any carpenter

- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it helps to sort them out beforehand. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

Getting a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

How it is made
Birch plywood
Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood keeps them flat, even across a wide section.
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.
Bedroom storage in Croydon
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Croydon, with about 28% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Croydon is within about a quarter of a mile of the Chatsworth Road Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. Where a street in Croydon is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
For families living near Heathfield Academy, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Addington Palace, about 2.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Questions we’re often asked
Is Croydon in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes, Croydon is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
My home in Croydon is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We’ll look at the room with you during the design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
