Fitted wardrobes for homes in Purley

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Purley, bedrooms normally have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Purley

Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Too little room for clothes

If you live near Dollypers Hill, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Fitted bedroom furniture in Purley

About 31% of the homes in the area around Purley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 28% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Croydon are set locally. Where a street in Purley is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit. About 62% of households in the area around Purley live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a flat near Purley station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is one of the older houses near St Swithun's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Purley is about 4 miles north of Thornton Heath, within the London Borough of Croydon. We cover Purley as part of our work across Croydon. Purley is one of the places in Croydon where we make fitted wardrobes.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Purley

  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The internal fittings
  • How square the room is

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
