Fitted wardrobes for homes in Winchmore Hill

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If you’re living with too little room for clothes and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Winchmore Hill, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it is a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Winchmore Hill

About 56% of the homes in the streets around Winchmore Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Winchmore Hill, Historic England’s list includes Rowan Tree House Woodside House (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Devon House (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Winchmore Hill is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Winchmore Hill station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to St. Paul's School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Winchmore Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
