Materials and finishes

Pull-out drawers

Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. Deeper drawers can take files. Each one is sized for what it holds.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

How we make fitted home offices for Barnehurst

Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Barnehurst. People usually come to us about an awkward space with no furniture that fits and a desk in the wrong light, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Barnehurst, a dining room or spare bedroom is often the room that has to double as an office. Cupboards that close over the desk let the room switch back when you’ve finished. We plan the cable routes around your sockets.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the home office we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standalone desk can go with you when you move. Fitted furniture stays put, and it makes more of the room. Which suits you depends on your plans. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Barnehurst

Do you cover homes near Barnehurst station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barnehurst?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long will the home office fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
