Home working in North End: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around North End, with about 29% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of North End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Oak Road Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 33% of homes in the streets around North End were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war rooms are usually regular in shape, so a desk and shelving can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

If your children go to St. Paul's (Slade Green) Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. Close to Braeburn Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

North End is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 5 miles south-west of Sidcup. We cover North End as part of our work across Bexley. North End is one of 27 places on our list for Bexley.

Across the rest of Bexley, our area takes in Sidcup (5 miles south-west), Welling (4 miles west), Bexley (3 miles south-west), Belvedere (2 miles north-west), Lessness Heath (2 miles north-west) and Bexleyheath (2 miles west).

How we make fitted home offices for North End

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In North End, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. If you are living with a laptop that moves from room to room and shelves that sag under books and files, that is what home offices are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around North End, where many homes date from the post-war decades, a spare room is often compact and simple to plan. A desk along one wall, shelves above and a cupboard for the printer can fit even a small room. Cable routes are planned before anything is fixed.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Do you need fitted home offices in North End?

Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • No proper place to work from home
  • Shelving that bows under the load
  • No way to put work away
  • A guest room that is needed for work

If you live in a flat close to Slade Green station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the office be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Tips worth knowing

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Look at the window and where the light falls
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. We size them for what you told us you’d store.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, use our contact form and tell us.

Your questions about fitted home offices in North End

Does a conservation area in or near North End affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Do you work in North End?

Yes. We cover North End and the rest of Bexley, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
