About our fitted home offices in Slade Green

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In Slade Green, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are work things on show in the evening and a desk buried under papers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Paperwork, printers and chargers are what make a desk look untidy, so cupboards with cable routes built in keep them hidden. For a home in Slade Green, the design can include a printer cupboard and file drawers. Cable routes lead to the sockets you have.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • Connecting printers and screens

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Filing drawers

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Slade Green homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Slade Green were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%) and since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Slade Green is within about a quarter of a mile of the Oak Road Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 26% of homes in the area around Slade Green were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Rooms from that era suit a full-width desk with shelving above, fixed to suit the wall.

If you live near Braeburn Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For a flat near Slade Green station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St. Augustine's Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Notice where daylight falls at different times
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Note the position of sockets in the room

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted.

Shelves

Shelving over the desk keeps reference books close. Deeper shelves lower down can take a printer or files. The design visit is where depths are agreed.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Does a conservation area in or near Slade Green affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Slade Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Can a home office double as a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. We will look at the options at the design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
