Fitted home offices for homes in Clapham Junction

In the area around Clapham Junction, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Clapham Junction include Church of St Mark (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Church of the Ascension (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a period home close to Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. If your children go to Christ Church CofE Primary School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. If you live near Imperial Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

About our fitted home offices in Clapham Junction

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in Clapham Junction a workspace that looks part of the room. If you are living with flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and a room with two jobs to do, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Older homes tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around Clapham Junction are that age. That leaves room for shelving above a desk right up to the picture rail or cornice. Some internal walls in older houses are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made office furniture comes in set sizes for straight walls. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. Bespoke furniture is made to the room and fits it. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a workspace that uses the room well. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What you get with us

  • 300+ projects completed
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • A design visit, then a written quote

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

Several things affect the price:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about the space you need to push back

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, drop us a line using the contact form and we will help.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Keep liquids away from the edge. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First you let us know about the room and what your work needs, including the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office we’ve discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Ask for a quote

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Questions we are often asked

Is Clapham Junction in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Clapham Junction is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My house in Clapham Junction is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.
