Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Fitted wardrobes in Clapham Junction: what you get

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where that suits the room. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in Clapham Junction, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. If you are living with empty alcoves in the bedroom and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Clapham Junction, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Clapham Junction is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Clapham Junction

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Clapham Junction, with about 20% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Clapham Junction include Church of St Mark (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Church of the Ascension (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the area around Clapham Junction (about 48%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.

If your home is one of the older houses near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Clapham Junction station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

An awkward room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

If you live near Imperial Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Clapham Junction

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
