Questions we’re often asked
Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Furzedown?
Yes. Furzedown is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Furzedown?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?
Often, yes. The desk, shelving and storage can be designed to leave room for a bed, or with doors that hide the desk away. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.
What does a built-in desk cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Fitted home offices in Furzedown: what you get
Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In Furzedown, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People typically come to us about an awkward space with no furniture that fits and glare from a window on the screen, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have a bay window in the front room, and the alcoves beside the chimney breast can take books and files. Around Furzedown, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, a front room like that can become a study without losing its character. Each piece follows the walls rather than a straight line.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What else we make in Furzedown
Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
What affects the price in Furzedown
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you get in touch:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Furzedown homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Furzedown were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Furzedown. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Terraced houses are more common around Furzedown than across Wandsworth: about 39% of households, against about 22%, according to Census 2021. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so home offices are made in sections that fit.

The problems fitted home offices solve
Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- An awkward space with no furniture that fits
- A room with two jobs to do
- A desk buried under papers
- Working at the kitchen table
If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
How fitting works for fitted home offices
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How it is made
Shelves
Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. Span, depth and load all matter. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.
Birch plywood
A home office shelf often carries heavy books and folders. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and stiff. Long spans need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
