Fitted home offices for homes in Clapham

Working from home is easier when the desk, shelves and storage are built for the job. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, shaped by the way you work. In Clapham, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. People usually come to us about files and folders piling up and a laptop that moves from room to room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A desk has to be level even when the floor isn’t, and in a house from before 1919 that means levelling and scribing at the base. A large share of the homes around Clapham were built before 1919, so levelling is part of the plan from the first visit. The shelving above follows the wall, with the edges scribed.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home

We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work right away.

A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. A desk designed with cable routes keeps them tidy. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.

Here’s what fitted home offices can help with:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • A desk in the wrong light

The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Questions from Clapham

Can you fit fitted home offices to the uneven walls of an older house in Clapham?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Clapham?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Clapham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

What materials do you use for home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we will measure and tell you what fits.

Clapham homes and fitted home offices

Homes built before 1919 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Clapham, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Clapham include Church of St Paul (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and Church of Holy Trinity (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That usually means a van in Clapham needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

For a flat near Clapham High Street station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Clapham is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile east of Stockwell. We can visit homes in Clapham on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our Lambeth coverage includes Clapham, along with the rest of the borough.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Clapham?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk can’t. Which suits you depends on your plans. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
