Loft storage in Crooked Billet

Loft storage in Crooked Billet: what you get

The space behind the knee wall typically has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in Crooked Billet, we’ll see what’s there. People typically come to us about unused space in a dormer and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Whether your home in Crooked Billet is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there is normally a space that could work harder. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Making use of tricky spaces in Crooked Billet

In the area around Crooked Billet, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 67 entries within half a mile of the centre of Crooked Billet. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Close to Cannizaro Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 0.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. First you let us know about the loft room and what you’d like to store there.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made in our workshop, in sections sized for the loft stairs. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls.

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of loft storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

A loft room can see more change in temperature than other rooms, so a stable material matters. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well. It’s used for most of the visible parts.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.

The problems loft storage solve

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

FAQs: loft storage in Crooked Billet

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crooked Billet?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.
