Fitted home offices for homes in Derry Downs
The desk is the heart of a home office. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. The design visit in Derry Downs is where these choices are made. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a tangle of chargers and leads and an awkward space with no furniture that fits.
A good part of the housing around Derry Downs is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions from Derry Downs
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Derry Downs?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How much does a fitted home office cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?
Standard shelving can sag under the weight of books and files. Span, depth and load all matter. We size the shelves for what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength is needed. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Why us?
- Designed for the room you have
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Saturday work by arrangement
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You get in touch and let us know about the work you do and the equipment you use.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Caring for painted furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:
- Think about what will sit on the shelves
- Think about the space you need to push back
- Tell us about every device that needs a home
- Let us know about parking near your home
If you’re having new sockets fitted, your electrician can do that around the furniture as planned. It helps if they know where the cable routes are. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.
Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.
