Fitted cupboards for homes in Derry Downs

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. People normally come to us about a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and landing shelves for bedding and towels, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Derry Downs, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitted cupboards in Derry Downs: local notes

In the streets around Derry Downs, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The St Mary Cray Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Derry Downs. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 30% of homes in the area around Derry Downs date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Kevington Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to St Philomena's Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, which keeps the look calm.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Using the full height of a room
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Cupboards that suit a period house

If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew's, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Questions from Derry Downs

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Derry Downs?

Yes, Derry Downs is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Derry Downs?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What we don’t do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • Any plumbing in a utility room

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
